Jobs in Minnesota hit record highs this summer

St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) – A new state report confirms the obvious when it comes to job postings.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development says job openings in the state “are at an all time high for the second quarter of 2021.” The report found that demand for workers far exceeded hiring, with employers reporting more than 205,000 vacancies as the economy continued to recover from the pandemic recession.

Compared to the second quarter of 2020, vacancies increased by 84%. The increase was around 40% compared to the second quarter before the 2019 pandemic. At the same time, the number of unemployed people decreased by almost 60% compared to the second quarter of last year and was about 33% higher than last year’s total. same three-month period in 2019.

Overall, these statistics translate into a rate of 0.6 unemployed for every vacant position. According to the state agency, the situation worsened as workers dropped out of the labor market due to concerns about COVID or other “pandemic pressures.”

Another confirmation of the obvious in the report is the list of preparers and servers as the most requested type of employee with over 35,000 job postings. There were more than 26,500 vacancies for retail-related jobs and 17,000 openings for health support workers.

Strong demand for labor is pushing up wages. State officials say the median wage supply is up 4.3 percent from a year ago. Some of the largest increases were in lower paid occupations. The report shows that median wage offers for building and grounds cleaning and maintenance workers have jumped by more than 20%. The median starting salary for preparers and servants rose 7.2 percent.
