3 dead after derailment of Amtrak’s Empire Builder train in Montana

A passenger train line crossing Minnesota derailed in Montana, killing three people, according to reports.

Photos posted on Twitter by several users show at least one car detached and overturned. In a statement, Amtrak said the line was carrying 147 passengers and 13 crew when five cars derailed. The train derailed between its stops in Le Havre and Shelby in central Montana and witnesses report that four cars overturned, reports the Associated Press.

According to multiple reports, at least three people were killed and dozens of oforothers are injured. Amtrak has confirmed multiple injuries but did not disclose the number or extent.

Due to the crash, Amtrak is canceling trains 7/27 and 8/28 traveling between Minot, North Dakota and Shelby, Montana, which were traveling on Saturday. At the same time, the Empire Builder 7 westbound train will end in Minneapolis and the 8 eastbound train will now begin in Minneapolis. No replacement travel will be available, Amtrak says.
